김호중의 첫 트로트 정규앨범 '우리가(家)'는 초동(발매 후 일주일간 판매량) 52만 장을 달성했다. '내일은 미스터트롯'에서 1위를 차지한 임영웅은 지난 5월 첫 정규앨범 '아임 히어로(IM HERO)'로 트로트 가수 최초 초동 밀리언셀러에 등극했다. 2위에 올랐던 영탁 또한 오는 4일 첫 정규앨범 'MMM'을 발매한다. 이에 대한 부담감을 묻자 그는 "팬분들께서 전작 기록을 뛰어넘자고 말씀하시는 걸 많이 봤다. 기록도 중요하겠지만 내 음악을 사랑해주셨으면 좋겠다"며 "솔직히 부담감을 왜 가지겠느냐. 가질 이유도 없다. 가수가 할 일은 그냥 노래를 하는 것 밖에 없다. 그리고 세상에 남는 거다. 기록이 남는 것도 중요하겠지만 내 목소리가 남는 게 더 중요하다"고 강조했다.

9월에는 SBS와의 단독쇼에도 나선다. 김호중은 "처음 연락을 받았을 때 너무나도 감사한 이야기였다. '어떻게 하면 이 무대를 잘 만들까'가 두 번째인 것 같다. 너무나도 훌륭하신 분들이 계신 걸로 전달을 받았다. 함께 머리를 맞대서 같이 해보자는 이야기를 들었다. 아직 시작된 단계는 아니지만 유일한 모습을 보여드리고 싶다. 내가 시도하지 않았던, 이 세상에서 시도하지 않았던 한 가지는 해야 되지 않겠냐는 생각을 가지고 있다"며 단단한 마음가짐과 함께 관전 포인트를 꼽았다.
인터뷰를 하며 김호중은 '사랑할 때 사랑 노래가 생각나고, 이별할 때 이별 노래가 생각나는 가수'라는 말을 여러 번 반복했다. 자신이 쓴 곡에 대한 욕심도 드러냈다. 그렇다면 김호중이 가장 하고 싶은 이야기는 무엇일까. 그는 "조용필 선생님의 '꿈'이라는 노래가 있다. 나도 꿈에 대한 이야기를 많이 하고 싶다. 내가 앞으로 꾸는 꿈에 대해 포커스가 많이 집중됐다. 사랑이나 이별에 대한 감정의 깊이가 얕은 건 아니다. 써 내려간다면 써 내릴 수 있을 것 같다"며 "다만 지금은 꿈에 대한 이야기가 나한테 더 많이 와있고, 집중할 수 있는 것 같다. 사람이 곡을 따라간다는 옛 말도 있다. 희망적이고 밝은 노래를 쓴다면 나도 곡을 따라가지 않을까 하는 믿음이 있다"고 웃어 보였다.
끝으로 가수 김호중과 인간 김호중의 꿈에 대해 물었다. 그러자 김호중은 오래전 관람했던 최백호의 공연 이야기를 꺼냈다. 관객과의 소통 시간, 한 곽객이 '어릴 때는 아버지의 가수셨는데 이제는 나의 가수가 되어계신다'는 이야기를 꺼냈다는 것. 성악을 하고 있던 김호중에게 그 말은 '나도 노래를 하는 사람인데 시간이 흘러서 이런 이야기를 들으면 얼마나 행복할까'하며 깊은 울림으로 남았다. 그리고 시간이 흘러 2022년의 김호중에게 목표가 됐다.
