연애는 삶의 함축이고, 결혼은 사회의 함축이라고 생각한다. ‘다양성 커플’이라는 단어를 빼고 ‘연애와 결혼’만 본다면 공감할 수 있는 가장 보편적인 감정이라고 생각한다. 이 보편적 감정을 통해 나(대중)와 그(출연진)를 비교해볼 수 있고 이를 통해 객관적으로 생각해볼 수 있는 가장 좋은 소재라고 생각했다.
Q. ‘메리 퀴어’를 통해 전하고 싶은 메시지나 목표가 있다면.
퀴어 이슈에 대해 ‘호불호’를 갖고 계신 분들은 그래도 나름대로의 관심이 있는 분들이라고 생각한다. 그러나 이런 관심조차 없는 분들이 아직까지는 대다수일 거라 생각한다. 이런 분들이 나와는 다른 사람들의 삶에 대해 조금이나마 관심을 가지고 생각해볼 수 있는 계기를 만들어 드리는 프로그램이 되면 좋겠다.

Q. ‘남(男)의 연애’에 대해 대중이 모르는 생소한 부분이나 특수성 같은 게 있을 텐데, 제작진이 어떻게 이해하고 준비했는지.
우선 제작진 중에는 성소수자가 없다. 따라서 선입견이나 고정관념을 내려놓고 제로 베이스에서 출발한다는 생각으로 접근했다. 가장 도움이 됐던 건 출연진 당사자들과의 대화였다. 출연진 선정 과정에서도 지원자들의 이야기를 최대한 많이 경청했다.
출연진과 이야기 나눌수록 느낀 건 퀴어라고 해서 특별히 생소하거나 어려운 점이 없다는 것이었다. 그들 역시 지극히 평범한 이웃이며 단지 사회가 그들을 특별하게 분류하고 있을 뿐이라는 생각이 들었다.
Q. ‘남의 연애’ 촬영이나 전개에서 예상치 못한 부분이 혹시 있었는지.
‘과감한 남자들의 솔직한 연애’라는 포스터 문구답게 출연진들이 감정표현에 솔직하고 가감이 없어서 현장 제작진들이 놀라는 순간이 많았다. 또한 사랑 앞에 설레고 가슴 아파하는 건 누구나 똑같았다.
Q. ‘남의 연애’를 통해 전하고 싶은 메시지나 목표가 있는지.
대단한 메시지나 목표는 없다. ‘남남 커플’이 다른 세상에서 살법한 특별한 존재가 아닌 이들 또한 평범한 사람들이라는 것을 보여주고 싶어서 있는 그대로를 아주 담백하게 담았다. 이들의 감정도 사랑도 보는 이들의 그것과 다르지 않다는 것을 자연스럽게 느낄 수 있으면 좋겠다.
Q. 다양성 연애처럼 파격적인 예능을 또 기획하고 있는지?
퀴어 예능에 한정해 말씀드린다면, ‘메리 퀴어’와 ‘남의 연애’ 이후 유사한 콘셉트의 콘텐츠가 다양한 플랫폼에서 더 좋은 기획으로 나왔으면 한다. 그렇게 된다면 제 개인적 목표는 모두 이룬 거라 더 이상 기획하지 않을 생각이다. 퀴어가 아니더라도 예능 담당자로서 늘 새로운 이야기와 장르를 고민하며 기획하고 있다. 그게 어떤 면에선 ‘파격’으로 표현될 수도 있을 것 같다.
